Kombucha demo at Lewes farmers market July 17
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market will be open from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, July 17, at George H.P. Smith Park, Johnson and DuPont avenues in Lewes. In case of inclement weather, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot at Sussex Drive and Savannah Road.
At 10 a.m. in the demo tents, Gayle Galbraith of Federal Brewing Company in Federalsburg, Md., will discuss how she makes artisanal kombucha. Galbraith, a holistic health coach, formulates her small-batch kombucha with organic, premium whole-leaf tea and functional ingredients. Flavors include Aronia Berry, made with local aronia berries, plus Elderberry and Imperial Garden – all made with whole-leaf, organic, Imperial Yellow tea, ginger, turmeric, cardamom and many more flavors.
Farmers/producers will offer cantaloupe, sweet local corn, peaches, blueberries, cherry and slicer tomatoes, peppers including shishito and poblano, chards, arugula, broccoli, lettuces, kale, mushrooms, microgreens, eggs, tilapia fish, crabs, oysters, beef, pork, chicken, honey, jams, fresh-baked breads, kombucha, pastries made with fruit from market growers, hemp products, flower bouquets including sunflowers, fresh-cut herbs, plants and much more.
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is producer-only, so customers are able to buy directly from the farmer who grew the produce. Only vendors who grow, raise or produce what they sell are allowed in this market.
The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is selling raffle tickets for three prizes – an elegant, private in-home dinner for 10, courtesy of Bramble & Brine at the Buttery; a Booze Buggy wagon full of fine wines and spirits; and the Fabu-Lewes Feast – eight $125 gift certificates from the best restaurants in Lewes. Each grand prize raffle is valued at $1,000. There are also three second-prize baskets of local gift cards. Tickets are $5 each or six for $25. The drawing will be held Saturday, Sept. 4.
This year’s Tomato Festival will take place at the market Saturday, Aug. 7. There will be tomato hand stamps for kids, a Guess the Number of Tomatoes in the Jar contest, and a demo by Cape Gazette food writer Denise Clemons at 10 a.m. Heirloom, cherry, and slicer tomatoes will be available in abundance. The festival celebrates National Farmers Market Week, which this year takes place Aug. 1-7.
The HLFM Wednesday market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is now open from 8 to 11 a.m. each week with 11 farmers/producers: 302 Aquaponics, Baywater Farms, Bennett Orchards, Bodine Farms, Dittmar Family Farms, Hattie’s Garden, Jackie Blues, Kalmar Farm, Mandala Pies, Stag Run Farm and Totem Farms.
Delaware COVID protocols have changed. Those who are not fully vaccinated, including children not yet eligible for vaccination, should continue to wear masks when they are at the market.
The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants can come to the SNAP tent to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market. WIC and SFMNP coupons will also be accepted at the market.
The HLFM continues its partnership with Epworth United Methodist Church Food Pantry. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from vendors to donate to the Epworth program every Saturday. The produce and other foods are gathered after each market session and given to Epworth. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
