My wife and I were on the 4:30 ferry (The New Jersey) from Cape May to Lewes July 13. We were about to dock in Lewes when a crew member noticed a family of nine ducks directly in the path of the ferry which was backing into the slip.
A crew member notified the captain who immediately reversed the engines to slow the ferry. The ducks were in a position where they could not get around the boat.
After several attempts to get the ducks to move, Captain Joe made a decision to back out of the slip and chose another slip to dock. All of the passengers cheered as the boat moved to another slip.
I am sure that the other passengers felt the same gratitude and thankfulness to Captain Joe for keeping this family of ducks out of harm’s way.
This, to us, says a lot for the caliber of personnel that are employed by the Delaware River and Bay Authority, and especially the Cape May-Lewes Ferry staff.
