More than 300 runners, walkers and Kiddie K sprinters fell out of the Crooked Hammock on Oct. 13 for the third annual Ashley Furio 5K.

A total of 265 runners and walkers crossed through the finish chute. Along with a Kiddle K and Special Olympics race, the number of competitors easily exceeded 300.

The men’s leaderboard was topped by Patrick Boettcher in 17:29. He was followed by Andrew Jakubowitch in 18:11, Chris Sherman in 19:39, Corey Phillips in 21:27 and Duane Christy in 22:00.

Kelly Tingle was the overall women’s winner in 20:33. She was followed by Erin Jakubowitch in 21:34, Carol Ernst in 22:42, Kelly Serpico in 23:06 and Lily Manlove in 23:29.

According to raceroster.com on the Races2Run web page: “Dave and Rose Furio have partnered with the Children's Beach House in Lewes to honor their beautiful daughter, Ashley Nicole Furio. With the help of many friends and family, and the strong desire to help children with special needs, they founded the Ashley Nicole Furio Endowment Fund in support of CBH's Margaret H. Rollins Child Development Center. The Child Development Center provides preschool and support services to 3- and 4-year-olds from Sussex County. Although the center serves children of all abilities, at least half are at-risk children who have developmental delays. In addition, many of the children served come from low-income families.”

There are hundreds of local races on the yearly calendar, all for worthy causes. The Furio 5K, because of the venue and the people behind the Children’s Beach House Margaret H. Rollins Development Center and the memory of Ashley Furio, continues to grow in participation numbers and enthusiasm. “We are already working on next year’s race to make it better,” said Rose Furio.
