Last day for 2021 Lewes farmers market slated Nov. 20

November 18, 2021

The last day of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market for the 2021 season will be from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 20. It is also the last Saturday to purchase yams, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, mushrooms, pies and all the fixins’ for Thanksgiving. The fall market is located at the Richard Shields Elementary School parking lot at the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive in Lewes. The market thanks all of its customers, farmers/producers, volunteers, and supporters for their participation this year. The 2022 market is set to open Saturday, May 7, at George H.P. Smith Park.

At this Saturday’s market, farmers/producers will be offering carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, beets, collard greens, lettuces, arugula, broccoli, cabbage, beets, radishes, winter squashes, turnips, apples, apple cider, peppers, freshly laid eggs, oysters in the shell, chicken, beef, fish, oysters, jams and jellies, honey, kombucha, baked goods, and fall wreaths for the door!

For the food drive this Saturday, customers are asked to both bring nonperishable items to the market, and to also consider purchasing fresh food at the market to donate to two organizations that feed those in the community who need a little help. The food pantries request certain nonperishables including spaghetti sauce, pasta, peanut butter, jams and jellies, canned fruits/vegetables/soups, boxed cereal, powdered or shelf stable milk, rice, and beans. Honor the HLFM's mission and the health needs of folk who use the food bank by providing healthy foods.

At the end of market hours, the produce and other foods are delivered to Casa San Francisco and Epworth United Methodist Church. It’s a challenging time for many, and this is a great way to get nutritious local food to more community members. Market organizers thank customers for their generosity.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants are encouraged to come to the SNAP tent at the market to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market.

Parking is limited at the market, as the Lewes School parking lot is still fenced off due to construction. Customers are advised to either walk or bike to the market. The market thanks Beebe Healthcare for allowing customers to also park in the outdoor Beebe lot in back of the hospital. Customers can enter that parking area through the main entrance to the hospital between Rite Aid and the hospital.
