Law enforcement grads complete police academy

Two Delaware Tech Owens Campus Criminal Justice: Law Enforcement Option students, Logan Pavlik of Lewes and Sean Murray of Milton, were sworn in as Delaware state police recruit troopers by Superior Court Judge James T. Vaughn Jr. at the Kent County Courthouse. The recruit troopers who completed the Delaware Tech LEO program in May 2014 are graduates of the inaugural class at the Owens Campus.
The Delaware Tech LEO program is designed and offered in partnership with the Delaware State Police Training Academy, and provides the education and training to be a competitive applicant for the Delaware State Police or a municipal police agency. “The LEO program provides another pathway for our students to pursue their careers; it’s not the only option, but it is a great option for those who can participate,” said Owens Campus Criminal Justice Department Chair and instructor Keith Faulkner.
The degree program, which offers students the opportunity to increase their hiring potential, simultaneously provides local agencies with much-needed resources more quickly. “The classes at Delaware Tech introduce you to the system, and when efficiency is expected, it’s nice to have that knowledge beforehand,” Pavlik said.
Having completed their Delaware State Police Academy coursework six weeks early, Pavlik and Murray have begun their 12-week field training with a senior trooper. Currently, Pavlik has been assigned to Troop 3 in Camden while Murray is working with Troop 7 in Lewes for field training. “I learn something every day. It’s never boring,” said Murray.
The LEO program is exclusively open to students enrolled in the criminal justice program, and interested students must have a 2.5 or better grade-point average and at least 30 college credits in order to apply. “The LEO program is a great asset; it provided a non-stressful environment so we could focus on learning,” Murray said.
In the future, Faulkner hopes to see the LEO program continue to grow so Delaware Tech can “provide well-qualified applicants who will meet the needs of the law enforcement community in Delaware.”
The Delaware Tech LEO program is offered at the Owens, Stanton/George and Terry campuses. For more information, go to www.dtcc.edu/academics/programs-study/law-enforcement-option.
