League of Women Voters campaign informs citizens to get out the vote

Effort targets under-represented communities, millenial population
August 5, 2018

The League of Women Voters of Sussex County is gearing up its Get-Out-The-Vote campaign, targeting under-represented communities and millennial populations.

Voter Services Chair Connie Jones said, “It is more than just registering voters. It is about arming citizens with information to make informed decisions, as well as creating enthusiasm about the importance of each and every vote. It’s about changing the dynamic and giving people a reason to want to go to the polls, especially in a midterm election, where historically voter turnout has been low.”

To extend its reach, the Sussex league partners with many organizations that provide services to minority communities and young adults. Gathered under the umbrella of nonpartisanship, GOTV partnering organizations include the Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice, the American Association of University Women, the Delaware Hispanic Commission, La Esperanza, First State Community Action Agency and Delaware Technical Community College.

Members of these community organizations will coordinate efforts to register voters and remind new registrants to go to the polls, as well as assisting the league with candidate forums and promotions of the VOTE411 online voters’ guide.

“We encourage everyone to go to VOTE411.org and check out the candidates’ positions on key issues,” said LWVSC President Martha Redmond. “Although getting out the vote is a challenge in non-presidential election years, the state and local issues at stake this fall will affect all of us in our everyday lives.”

Races this fall include U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives District 1, State Attorney General, State Treasurer, Auditor of Accounts, State Senate and State House of Representatives.

Sussex County residents will vote for State Senate Districts 21 and 6, House Representative Districts 41, 36, 14, 20 and 38, County Council Districts 4 and 5, Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds and County Sheriff.
