Letter inspires reader to write a poem

July 18, 2023

I read Kathleen Jennings’ letter to the editor in which she recommends this movie “Sound of Freedom,” and I couldn’t agree with her more. It moved me to write the following poem:

Children are being abducted
from their homes, streets and stores.
Is anyone listening, doing something or anything?
If you care, stand up and roar.
Cries for Freedom

Children are being sold
as slaves and sexual partners,
very few are considered rejects.
Will they have the chance to get old?
Cries for Freedom

A lucrative business opportunity for many, I’m sure.
Definitely a money-making proposition.
Where are the lawmakers, politicians and crime stoppers
that can catch these perpetrators through various lures?
Cries for Freedom

Society has turned a blind eye to all of this.
Their hearing is lost, they’ve turned a deaf ear.
They want you to think that children are living
a life filled with fun and loving bliss.
Cries for Freedom

We need to make more people aware of this real tragedy.
Try and heal these innocent babes.
Capture these evildoers, punish them for their crimes,
with whatever means or strategies.
Cries for Freedom

Listen intently, be alert and you will hear
their cries for freedom.
Motivate yourself to act in some capacity.
Let go of your fears, do something to stop their wails.
For God’s children are not for sale.

I hope she likes it, and it will move government officials to do more to end this atrocity.
