Letter: Route 1, 16 crossover will cause big problems

April 8, 2019

The following letter was sent to DelDOT with a copy to the Cape Gazette.

I know plans are in place to remove the traffic light and replace it with an overpass at the intersection of Routes 1 and 16. This will cause major problems for residents and businesses located between this intersection and the 5 Points intersection at Routes 9 and 1 in Lewes.

Without any break in traffic flowing south from Route 16, travelers, including cars, school buses, trucks and motorcycles, will have to make dangerous attempts to cross over in front of nonstop traffic heading south at any of the 12 crossovers that exist on Route 1 in this area. There are several businesses that depend on this access, and access to residential roads, existing on either side of Route 1 here in Milton, Nassau and Lewes.

Please explain exactly how this is an improvement to this area by increasing the traffic danger to us and complicating access as a result of this decision? And what plans are in place to reduce the inevitability of more traffic accidents and possible deaths as a result of this decision?
