Lewes 250 to host ‘Revolutionary Dissent’ author for April 23 discussion
Lewes 250, the Lewes Public Library and Browseabout Books will welcome Stephen D. Solomon, author of “Revolutionary Dissent: How the Founding Generation Created the Freedom of Speech,” at 6 p.m., Thursday, April 23, at the library, 111 Adams Ave., Lewes, and streaming online via Zoom.
“Revolutionary Dissent” explores how Americans of the Revolutionary War period employed robust speech against the British and against each other, bringing to life a world of colorful and stormy protests that included effigies, pamphlets, songs, sermons, cartoons, letters and liberty trees. This uninhibited dissent provided a distinctly American meaning to the ideas of freedom of speech and the press at a time when England allowed prosecutions of those who criticized government.
Solomon will be joined in conversation by Ronald Collins, a legal scholar and Lewes Public Library Distinguished Lecturer. “When it comes to dissent during America’s revolutionary era, few can match Professor Solomon and his engaging book ‘Revolutionary Dissent,’” said Collins. “This is a timely book as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our independence.”
Registration is required. At registration, participants will be asked to select in-person or online attendance. Visit tinyurl.com/AuthorEventsLPL or call 302-645-2733.
