Lewes Base Ball Club doubleheader set May 20

Games held at Villages of Five Points fields
May 18, 2023

The Lewes Base Ball Club will put its 3-1 record on the line Saturday, May 20, as it takes on Diamond State Base Ball Club in an 1864-rules doubleheader. First pitch is set for noon at the Villages of Five Points on the field along Old Orchard Road.

There is no admission fee, and spectators are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets and picnic lunch as they take in vintage base ball. Some notable rules differences include batters being out if a batted ball is caught on the fly or on one bounce, no fielding gloves used, and the pitcher standing 45 feet from home base. There are still nine players to a side and the bases are 90 feet apart.

In previous club action, Lewes traveled to West Chester, Pa., April 22 to celebrate Earth Day and take on two Pennsylvania clubs — Brandywine Base Ball Club of West Chester and Keystone Base Ball Club of Harrisburg.

Lewes faced Brandywine in the first game. Despite giving up two runs in the top of the first inning, Lewes recovered by evening the score in the bottom half and steadily adding runs throughout the game. Lewes and Harrisburg were caught in a spirited match that saw Lewes pull ahead for good in the eighth inning.
