Lewes Beach dune crossings widened

DNREC takes action to improve emergency access
August 22, 2020

Several dune crossings on Lewes Beach have been widened to improve emergency access to the beach.

Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control’s Shoreline and Waterway Management Section took action at the request of the City of Lewes, said DNREC spokesman Michael Globetti.

Residents of Lewes Beach raised concerns regarding the loss of native plants as a result of the work. Globetti said it is an unfortunate but unavoidable circumstance.

“There is often vegetation disturbance associated with the establishing or maintenance of dune crossings,” he said. “While DNREC’s Shoreline Management Program tries to minimize it, some is inevitable.”
