Lewes DAR to host bake sale and Fountain of Youth photo ops Dec. 4

November 26, 2021

The Col. David Hall Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will hold an outdoor holiday bake sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Thomas Maull House, 536 Pilottown Road, Lewes. The historic 1739 property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The public is invited to take holiday photos in front of the chapter’s Fountain of Youth decorated for the season with greenery and wreaths.

In addition to references in a number of Cape Gazette articles, the Fountain of Youth was recently referred to in two local publications. In the Journal of the Lewes Historical Society, 2021 edition, it is described as a natural spring, believed to date from before the founding of Lewes. In “The Haunted History of Delaware,” author Josh Hitchens describes moving the grass and leaves aside to reveal clear water underneath. He drank from it and described the water as the sweetest and freshest ever.

Homemade baked goods will be offered for sale. All sweet treats are pre-packaged so they can easily go to the many holiday activities of the day. The bake sale is a major fundraiser to help with preservation of the historic property. Public parking is available on the canal side of the property.
