Lewes Drawbridge Beautification Project in the 1920s

October 1, 2019

This DelDOT photograph from the early 1920s shows the Savannah Road drawbridge looking westward from the beach side of the bridge.

The bridge lamps and other landscaping treatments in this scene show that municipal beautification projects are not just a contemporary phenomenon. The bridge in this week’s spectacular fall weather is ablaze with the colors of Lewes in Bloom flowers.

Once a current bridge rehab project is complete, Lewes in Bloom’s Art in Bloom committee plans to get started on an initiative to place colorful tiles with an historical motif along the concrete knee walls that face the bridge’s driving lanes.
