Lewes Elementary project honors memory of Zayden Chandler

Gratitude rock garden
July 7, 2025

To conclude a year of service, Lewes Elementary student leadership team members created a gratitude rock garden beside the school playground.

A dedicated section of the garden honors the memory of Zayden Chandler, a beloved classmate who passed away from cancer. He would have have been a member of this year’s fifth-grade class. The students invited members of Zayden’s family to view the garden and see a colorful assortment of stones assembled in a Z in his honor.

Located on the back side of the playground facing Fred Thomas Middle School, the garden was designed to inspire kindness, reflection and connection. Students invite community members to visit the garden, take a rock as a token of gratitude or encouragement, and contribute their own hand-painted rocks to grow the collection.

“This project was created to make a positive difference and remember Zayden in a way that brings people together,” said Marisa Wengryn, student leadership team advisor. “We hope it continues to grow as a symbol of hope, love and unity.”
