Lewes Farmers Market continues Aug. 18 at George Smith park in Lewes

August 15, 2018

It’s the height of the summer harvest, and so much goodness will be at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 18, at George H.P. Smith Park in Lewes.

Shoppers can expect to find okra, Shishito peppers, Messina yellow freestone peaches, Fantasia yellow freestone nectarines, heirloom tomatoes, arugula, Italian eggplant, basil - fresh cut and made into pesto, potatoes, green beans, lima beans, garlic, zinnias and gladiola bouquets. There will also be fresh hamburger, lamb and pork sausages, yogurt, milk, ice cream, butter, eggs, cheese, jams and jellies, and much more.

At 9 a.m., Jennifer Noonan, Lewes Public Library children’s librarian, will read “June 29, 1999” by David Weisner. At 10 a.m., Executive Chef Ted Deptula from the Lewes Yacht Club will demo a meal to fit the season made with produce from the market.

Patrons may also enter the raffle for the free bicycle that the HLFM gives away every year to encourage all to bike or walk to the market.

The market continues its SNAP (EBT Food Stamps) program. To help lower economic barriers to local, healthy food, the HLFM matches up to $20 each participant each week with HLFM Bonus Bucks. SNAP participants can come to the SNAP tent to pick up the bonus $20 in tokens to use at the market.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market also welcomes participants in Delaware's Women, Infants and Children program. WIC coupons can be used to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at the market. Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons are also welcome.

There’s lots of parking at the Shields Elementary School and Lewes School parking lots, just off the corner of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive, a short walk to the market. The market provides a veggie valet service to help customers carry heavy loads to their cars. This service is located right outside the HLFM Information Tent.

The market is open rain or shine, but if it is raining, the market moves to Shields Elementary School parking lot on Savannah Road at Sussex Drive.

There’s also a market at Crooked Hammock Brewery from 8 to 11 a.m., Wednesdays, at Crooked Hammock Way and Kings Highway.
