For 15 years, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market has awarded scholarships to small-scale Delmarva farmers to attend sustainable farming conferences including Pasa's annual sustainable agriculture conference, the Future Harvest CASA Conference, the Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Conference, and others.
This year, the HLFM awarded four scholarships.
Craig Brady of Stag Run Farm in Georgetown received monies from the regular scholarship fund.
In 2016, the Historic Lewes Farmers Market established an emerging women farmers’ scholarship fund in loving memory of Delaware farmer Debra L. Schaefer. This year, three farmers received a Debra L. Schaefer Scholarship for Emerging Women Farmers: Jenny Dittmar, Dittmar Family Farms, Felton; Talon Holleman, R.O.O.T.S Youth Development, Georgetown; and Dani Winters, Winters Farm Florals, Salisbury, Md.
Consistent with its mission, the board of directors of the Historic Lewes Farmers Market is committed to supporting farmers and emerging farmers who grow local fruits, vegetables, produce and other foods. These scholarships help small Delmarva farmers become better educated about sustainable farming practices.
