Lewes High School baseball, softball takes field in 1958

Major League Baseball teams will take the field across the country to kick off the 2024 season this week. Locally, high school baseball and softball teams played their first games last week. This is a team photo of the 1958 Lewes High School baseball team. The players competed in 12 games beginning in early April through mid-May. The team was coached by Anthony Georgiana and captained by Bill Lofland. Other players included Bob Langrell, Ray Gibson, Joe Moore, Jerry Russell, John Morris, Ed Buck, Dave Maull, John Maull, Harry Shores, Bill Miller and Ronald Palmer. According to the short description in The Beacon yearbook, the team boasted several returning lettermen. They expected to lean on a strong pitching staff and experience. 

The softball team played a seven-game schedule. The team was coached by Dorothy Vessels. May Bright was the captain, with Bette Reed and Joanne Prettyman serving as co-captains. Bonnie Bryan was the manager, while Cathy Stack was scorekeeper. The roster included Carol Ritter, Joyce Ritter, Joanne Maull, Patsy Howard, Carole A. Palmer, Judy Brittingham, Dolly Smith, Gail Schroeder, Marilyn Prettyman, Nancy Rockwell, Joyce Smith, Holly Carter, Debbie Sentman, Ruth Foraker, Linda Robinson, Marie Boehm, Judy Minner and Alice Marvel.
