Lewes kindergarteners’ parade highlights literacy projects

December 27, 2025

Kindergarten students at Lewes Elementary School recently celebrated a beloved holiday tradition through a blend of reading, creativity and hands-on learning.

As part of a seasonal literacy activity, students read “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade” by Melissa Sweet, a picture book that tells the history behind the iconic balloons in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Inspired by the story, the young learners designed and constructed their own colorful balloon creations, using imagination and problem-solving skills to bring their ideas to life. The project culminated in a festive parade through their school, where students proudly showcased their handmade balloons while classmates and staff lined the hallways to cheer them on.

The activity connected students to a widely cherished holiday event and also fostered creativity, collaboration and a joyful sense of community throughout the school.
