Lewes Loves Masks contest seeks safety selfies

September 2, 2020

The Lewes Chamber of Commerce’s Restarting Lewes’s Economy committee, working with the City of Lewes, has been meeting virtually since early May to develop initiatives to message the community that Lewes businesses are open and it’s safe to visit them.

The group’s latest project is designed to reinforce the safety aspects of visiting local businesses. The City of Lewes ordinance requiring people to wear masks in the historic Lewes business district has been in effect since early July and has been extended until the end of the year.

The Lewes Loves Masks contest will encourage people to come to Lewes and snap a photo of themselves with masks on. Creativity and humor will be rewarded.

To be entered into the contest, participants need to post their photos on Instagram with the hashtag #LewesLovesMasks. All posts have to be public.

Each month through December has a different mask theme. The monthly winner will receive a $50 gift card from a Lewes-area business. The Lewes chamber will like a post to confirm entry.

Most Creative is September’s theme, and the most creative mask or scene will be a winner. Team Pride is October’s theme, when people can show off their favorite team or sport. Family is November’s theme, and the best picture of all family members in masks will be the winner. Holiday is December’s theme, and the photo with the best holiday-themed mask will win.

The committee developed the Love, Lewes marketing campaign that included the creation of an original logo. New street banners were fabricated with the image and installed in the historic business district and along Savannah Road on the beach side of Lewes. Yard signs with the image were made and have been for sale since Memorial Day weekend. To date, more than 450 yard signs have been purchased and can be seen throughout Lewes.
