Lewes majors off to hot start in Pat Knight tournament
Once again, Milton and Lewes squared off for glory on the baseball diamond. This time, Lewes strolled away with a 6-1 win July 23, but it might not be the last time the two clash.
The two major teams started the Pat Knight District 3 tournament with Lewes claiming a 13-3 victory over Millsboro, while Milton earned an 11-3 win over Lower Sussex July 21. Should the rank and file remain, the two teams will meet again in the Saturday, July 27 championship.
Lewes vs. Millsboro
Chance Gunter led the offensive explosion July 21, notching three RBIs in a contest that was over almost as soon as it began. Tallying five runs in the first two innings and three in the third, Lewes cruised to a 13-3 mercy-rule victory. Michael Scesa led the team with two hits, while Colton Pusey and Barry Barlow each scored twice.
Milton vs. Lower Sussex
Milton scored early and often against Lower Sussex, plating four in the first, three in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth. Cole Robson and Dylan Redd touched home three times each. Fareed Cromartie and Pierce Czepial each registered two knocks. Both totals led their respective categories. Robson struck out nine of the 11 batters he faced in the 11-4 victory
Lewes vs. Milton
Both teams came into the July 23 contest with high hopes, but Lewes emerged unscathed while Milton suffered its first loss in the 6-1 contest. Lucas Skonieczki struck out seven over 3.1 frames for Lewes, surrendering just one hit and one earned run. Lewes’ Dalton Zmuda’s three RBIs and Lewes’ Michael DiMuzio’s two hits were both game-highs. DiMuzio tied Nolan Jones with a game-high two runs.
Milton jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Czepial sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Craig. Lewes responded in the second inning when Zmuda sent a liner into left to score DiMuzio and Jones to take the lead. A couple of Milton errors in the third led to two more runs, giving Lewes a 4-1 lead.
Things settled until the bottom of the fifth when Jones capitalized on an error to land on second during his single. DiMuzio joined Jones on the base paths and stole second to put runners in scoring position. Zmuda picked up his third RBI and Gunter grabbed his first on a pair of fielder’s choices sandwiched between a Condon walk. Robson, the Milton catcher, took things into his own hands to end the inning when he tagged Condon trying to score on a passed ball.
It was a momentum boost, but Milton could not capitalize as they were set down in order to end the game and give Lewes a 6-1 victory.
