Lewes man dies in Route 1 moped crash

September 5, 2022

A Lewes man, 23, died Sept. 4 after a crash on Route 1 east of Milton.

The crash happened at 10:45 p.m., when a moped was traveling westbound on Lockerman Road approaching the intersection of Route 1 northbound, said Sgt. India Sturgis of the Delaware State Police. For unknown reasons, she said, the moped disregarded a “Do Not Enter” sign and began traveling southbound in the left northbound lane of Route 1. At the same time, two vehicles were traveling north in the left lane of Route 1; an unknown vehicle swerved right to avoid colliding with the moped, Sturgis said, but a Mazda driven by a Lincoln boy, 17, traveling behind the first car, was unable to swerve in time, resulting in a head-on collision with the moped.

The moped operator was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, Sturgis said. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next of kin.

The Mazda driver and a passenger, 17, were properly restrained and transported to an area hospital, where they were treated and released with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The roadway was closed for about four hours while the collision was investigated.

The Delaware State Police Troop 7 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers ask anyone who witnessed this collision to contact Cpl/3 K. Argo at 302-703-3264, or Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333 or delawarecrimestoppers.com.
