The Lewes Minor League All-Stars were eliminated from the 8-10 state tournament July 28, with a 7-4 loss to Middletown, Odessa, Townsend.
MOT opened the scoring in the first inning, but Lewes answered in the bottom half with a run of their own. MOT added another run in the second.
Lewes took a 4-2 lead in the third inning, but gave up one run in the four, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Briggs Gannon led the way for Lewes, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Finn Gannon was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Also collecting hits for Lewes were Ben Pease, Lucca Fazio, Lucas Skonieczki and Jacoby Clark.
Finn got the start on the mound, tossing four innings, allowing six hits and only one earned run. He struck out five batters and surrendered zero walks.
Pitching in relief were Pease and Lucca Tobias.
Lewes falls to Canal
A late rally fell just short July 27, as the District 3 Lewes 8-10 All-Stars dropped a tough 12-10 game to Canal in the state tournament.
Lewes scored a run in the first inning, as Finn Gannon singled to score his brother Briggs. Canal came back to score two in the second to snag a 2-1 lead. Lewes regained the lead with four runs in the third. Finn Gannon slammed a single to score Briggs, and Ben Pease and Finn scored on a hit by Lucca Fazio.
The Lewes squad was led by Finn, who went 4-for-4 and knocked in five runs. Fazio went 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Briggs went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Grant Hershelman drove in a run.
Canal answered with seven runs in the bottom of the third. They added three more in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lewes squad wasn’t going away easy, though, as Cole Kastor, Briggs, Finn and Fazio each garnered a sixth inning hit to bring the Lewes team to within two.
Briggs started on the mound, striking out three Canal batters. Fazio came in from the bullpen in the third, putting four Canal batters in the book via the K.
Ethan Tuten led the Canal squad with three RBIs. Owen Fresconi, Hunter Pettit and Roman Ebaugh each garnered two RBIs. Aiden Marston had one.
Tuten went the distance on the rubber, striking out five batters and picking up the win.
“I was very happy with the boys’ effort and mentality tonight,” said Lewes manager Blake Hershelman. “This is a special group that believes they can win any game until the last out. I think they showed that.”
