Lewes to offer free Arbor Day tree care seminar April 27

April 11, 2018

The City of Lewes will celebrate Arbor Day with a free seminar on the dos and don'ts of tree care at 10 a.m., Friday April 27, in the City Meeting Room at the Margaret H. Rollins Community Center. The tree talk will be given by Dr. Neil Hendrickson of Bartlett Tree Research Lab and by Mark Shaw, arborist at Bartlett Tree Experts. They can answer questions about what kind of tree to plant where, what that stuff is on a tree, when and how to trim a tree, why a tree may look dead, and other tree-related issues.

Alison Kirk, parks and marina administrator and chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission for the City of Lewes, said, "Both Dr. Hendrickson and Mark Shaw have worked with us on various tree issues and also led a tree workshop for our volunteers. The commission found the workshop very insightful, interesting and entertaining, and we are excited to offer the seminar to the public."

After the seminar, volunteers from the Parks and Recreation Commission will plant a native flowering dogwood tree in Stango Park. Members from the public are encouraged to join in the tree planting after learning tips and tricks from the seminar.

This year also marks the 17th year in a row that the City of Lewes has been named Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. To achieve the recognition, the city met the program's four requirements: a tree board commissioner, a tree-care ordinance, an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Over 900 city trees have been inventoried, and each has a bronze numbered tag on it.

Anyone can learn details about a particular tree such as its species, age and health just by entering the tag number into the ArborScope program. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.
