Lewes Polka Dot Powerhouse chapter donates to Cape district

Dream Drive benefits homeless student program
December 27, 2021

Thanks to the generous donations from the local community and members of the Polka Dot Powerhouse, homeless youth in the Cape Henlopen School District will have one less thing to worry about.

Members of the Lewes PDP chapter delivered three carloads of personal hygiene products Dec. 8, including soaps, shampoos, body washes and deodorants, to the Cape coordinator working to help homeless students in the district. Items were collected as part of the Lewes PDP’s annual Dream Drive to benefit the community.

At any given time, there are more than 100 homeless students attending school in the Cape Henlopen School District. These youth often move from place to place, staying with relatives, sleeping on couches or floors, sometimes living in motels. The constant upheaval means they often do not have many of the necessities of daily life.

“Hygiene is an ongoing need that can add up for people,” said Craig Warrington, homeless liaison for the district. “This group really filled this need.”

Items were dropped off throughout November at The Wheelhouse, Provident State Bank and Jeanine O’Donnell State Farm Insurance. Nilima Palekar, chair of the PDP Dream Drive, was overwhelmed by the amount of products people donated.

“This is incredible to be in such a caring community. Thank you to people who donated and to those who supplied our drop-off sites,” said Palekar.

The hygiene product drive was part of the Dots’ annual charity Dream Drive. The Lewes PDP chapter has designated the next year to learning more about and helping the homeless in the local area.

Polka Dot Powerhouse’s mission is to connect the world’s most positive, action-forward, amazing women to build lifelong friendships and business relationships.
