A Lewes woman died Aug. 19 following a two-vehicle crash on Route 24 near Angola.
Police said the crash happened about 1:55 p.m., when a Honda CR-V was stopped at the stop sign at Route 24 and Harts Road, and, for reasons unknown, proceeded onto Route 24 into the path of a westbound Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer. As a result, police said, the front of the Freightliner struck the driver’s side of the Honda. The left rear-seat passenger in the Honda, a Lewes woman, 68, was taken to an area hospital where she died. Her name is being withheld until her family is notified.
The driver of the Honda, a Lewes man, 78, and the front-seat passenger, a Lewes woman, 36, were taken to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The right rear-seat passenger, a 37-year-old woman from Jersey City, N.J., was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries.
The driver of the Freightliner, a 64-year-old man from Bowie, Md., refused transport to the hospital.
Route 24 was closed for an extended time while the scene was investigated and cleared.
