Lewes yard waste pickup too infrequent

August 9, 2022

I am a longtime resident of Lewes. This is the second season I have been cutting my grass to try to save some money. I am soon to turn 69 at the end of August. Every spring/summer season that I can remember, the yard waste has been picked up weekly. Not this year. I have two cans and use brown bags. I mow the grass, bag it and drag the three to four bags up against the house. This June and July we had many showers. These brown bags get saturated, then smell terrible, dry, and this process happens again and again in a two-week period. The day before yard waste pickup, I lug the bags to the curb, but now the bottoms of the bags have opened and I have smelly grass that is now on the ground. I have to do my best to pick up what I can and go through new bags.

Last week, I contacted Mr. Andrew Williams, mayor of Lewes. In his response, he appreciated the point I raised about the collection frequency. Mr. Williams shared this email with City Manager Ann Marie Townshend. Her reply referenced the schedule of trash pickup and their thought process of how the town assesses vegetation growth to evaluate the yard waste pickup. She claims that it has been every two weeks, but I have to disagree with her.

If anyone else is having the same problems, I would appreciate if you could also contact the City of Lewes.
