Lights Out! World War II Fire Control Tower 3 begins next phase of restorations

October 23, 2019

The Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation, The Fort Miles Historical Association, and DNREC’s Division of Parks and Recreation will be entering the next phase of World War II Artillery Fire Control Tower 3 restoration located within the Delaware Seashore State Park on Route One just south of Dewey Beach.

The iconic blue lights have gone dark as the exterior restorations begin. Lights will be reinstalled after improvements are completed. Part of the Phase II work is to remove about two feet of sand from the 1962 storm that currently blocks the tower entrance.

The organizations have made significant progress, raising $665,000 of the projected $1 million needed, due to the generosity of numerous donors including: Longwood Foundation, Crystal Trust Foundation, Marmot Foundation, Fulton Bank, Welfare Foundation, First Shore Bank, Delaware Community  Foundation, Laffey McHugh Foundation, Creative Resource Group, Focus Multisports/Coastal Delaware Running Festival, State of Delaware through the Bond Bill appropriation for historic sites, Veterans Administration for Delaware, and many small businesses and individuals.

As they begin this next phase of restoration, the group of organizations is aggressively working toward raising the remaining $335,970 required to complete the project.

Opening Tower #3 to the general public will promote tourism by offering interpretive educational programs and social events in Delaware Seashore State Park and coastal Delaware. Visit and donate today at www.restorethetower.org.
