Lily brings new Thai flavor to Rehoboth Beach

February 6, 2009
For owner Lily Thamibutra, the opening of Lily Thai Cuisine is more than just another new restaurant popping up in Rehoboth Beach. It’s the culmination of almost a lifetime of experience cooking Thai dishes.

Lily, located next to Nicola Pizza at 10 North First St., is Thamibutra’s first restaurant venture.

She spent the past five years working under her sister at Seaside Thai. Thamibutra has been cooking since she was 13 years old.

“I love Thai food,” she said.

Lily opened Dec. 26, and while Thamibutra was looking to open her own place, finding the location turned out to be a happy accident.

“One day my boyfriend walked to Lingo’s Market, and he saw the sign out front that said ‘For Rent.’ I said, ‘Let’s go inside and talk to them.’ We walked through the restaurant and I said, ‘I like it,’” she said.

Thamibutra said it took two months to get the restaurant ready for opening.

The menu has something for everyone, keeping with Lily’s motto, “Simple yet classic. Original and delicious.”

Among the more notable items are the pad Thai noodles with chicken or shrimp; tom yum goong soup; a sweet and sour entrée – chicken sautéed with tomatoes, green bell peppers, onions, cucumber and pineapples; and kao pad fried rice with shrimp or Maryland crab meat.

Everything on the menu is under $18, except for the fresh catch whole fish, which is market priced. Lily also has daily lunch and dinner specials.

All lunch specials are priced at $8.95 and come with a salad and spring roll. Lunch specials are served from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.; dinner specials are from 3 p.m. to close. Lily also has vegetarian options, a children’s menu and delivery service.

Lily will also have a cocktail bar once the restaurant receives a liquor license, perhaps by this summer, Thamibutra said. The Thai flavor extends to the drink menu with concoctions such as the Thai iced tea, a delicious little beverage made up of tea, half and half or cream and a little touch of sugar.

“I try to have nice portions at a good price. Any people can come walk in here and be comfortable,” Thamibutra said. “I try to give my customers the best I can and keep them happy.”
