Little Free Library pantry movement comes to Cape Region

One cupboard in place, two more seek homes
April 10, 2020

A small community project is taking place during the COVID-19 lockdown. “Everyone is at home wondering what in the world can we do?” Katherine Ware said. Her family members came together to create three new Lewes Little Free Libraries that are to be used to provide nonperishable food items as well as books.

The funding for the libraries has been provided by James Riordan, director of The MORE Foundation, an area nonprofit. Building materials were donated by Nuttle Lumber Center in Lewes. Matthew Hollingsworth, an area craftsman constructed each library, and Camp Arrowhead allowed the project to be built in its building. Ware, along with her daughter Julianne, a Sussex Tech English teacher, and grandson Jackson Moore painted each library.

The first pantry has been placed on Janice Road, near the Whispering Pines entrance of the Lewes Senior Activity Center. Community members who are in need are invited to use product from the library, and those who have extra can restock with nonperishable dry goods that have a long shelf life. Pet food is also welcome. The team is still looking for two other locations to place the other libraries.
