Local children believe at Elks Polar Express Extravaganza

December 25, 2022

Although the weather was chilly and the skies were dreary, the atmosphere was cheery inside the Elks Lodge as the Polar Express train chugged into the station at Cape Henlopen Elks 2540 in Lewes.

The call for “All Aboard!,” could be heard Dec. 11 as the Elks hall was magically transformed into a Polar Express train station.

About three dozen children and their families were welcomed at the free event by elves Buddy Hall-McBride and Joanne Mayer as they climbed aboard and became passengers.

Helpful elves directed passengers to different train stations where the travelers met Santa's reindeer, and then made out their wish lists to mail in a special North Pole mailbox. After that, ticket agent Mary Pingor handed out keepsake golden train tickets, pointing out how important they were and warning passengers not to lose them. Next, cheerful conductor Marty Schreck asked for “Tickets, please!” and hole-punched those train tickets while posing for photos in front of a huge train mural.

The adventure continued as each passenger received a goody bag of small toys, candy and a Polar Express Believe bell. All along the way, happy elves frolicked around as cheerful servers sang and danced to the Polar Express soundtrack while carrying special trays of hot chocolate.

And for those who believe – and even those who don't – there was Santa himself. Santa's helper Mary DiGennaro listened to Christmas wishes and passed out hand-picked gifts. Craft tables stood nearby for the young passengers to unwrap their presents and enjoy popcorn, cookies and ice cream before leaving the station with magical memories of the day.

This year’s Polar Express Extravaganza was a great success, and even better than the previous two years’ events. The efforts of approximately 35 hardworking volunteers made the event possible. Regardless of the hundreds of hours spent behind the scenes planning and preparing – presents wrapped, goody bags stuffed, cookies made and more – this event was a heartwarming experience for all. It was so very rewarding to see the smiles and hear the laughter of the young passengers.
