Local Christmas golf gift opportunities

December 16, 2016

The Cape Region retail outlets continue to do a booming business this holiday season. With a week to go, there’s also still time to find something nice for your golf-loving friends and family members among the Cape Region’s golf courses, the local golf store and other golf options.

Keep in mind that for the golf course or pro shop gift-buying opportunities, daytime hours are the rule. In addition, the sooner you visit, the better the selections will be.

Ruddo’s Golf, at 18467 Coastal Highway next to Ocean Boulevard Furniture, remains the only Cape Region golf store. PGA Professional Bret Marshall runs the place, and he told me about some of the specials Ruddo’s is running through Christmas.

Adidas and other golf shirts are 50 percent off, and MLB/NFL logo shirts are at a 30 percent discount. The dozens of golf shoes on display have $10 to $60 knocked off their normal prices. The golf bags are on sale at up to 20 percent off. Titleist Pro V1 and ProV1X golf balls are on sale for $39.99 from now through Christmas. Ruddo’s also does a brisk business in gift cards, which are great for those who might be reluctant to pick out a particular item. The golf store will be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day, with expanded hours as Christmas approaches. For more information, call Ruddo’s at 302-703-2555.

American Classic Golf Club lies just off Postal Lane, near Route 1, at 18485 Bethpage Drive, and offers nine holes on its improved executive-length layout. Its phone number is 302-703-6662 (americanclassicgolf.com).

This year the club is selling $35 gift bags under the tree in the pro shop, filled with a nice mix of golf items. They’ve also knocked 40 percent off their golf shoe prices, and have bag and bag/club sets on special. Open from 8 a.m. till dusk, the pro shop also sells gift certificates as well as discounted lesson plans.

Baywood Greens, at 32267 Clubhouse Way in Long Neck, carries several well-known golf brands, and is running a special on TaylorMade and Ping putters at $30 off. Wedges are also offered at a discount, and assistant pro Pete McCaffrey said they have tons of apparel. Golf shoes are also knocked down $20 from the posted price, and McCaffrey is selling four golf lessons for the price of three.

If your golf person is into golf logos, Baywood is now selling dress shirts from Turtleson and Brooks Brothers with the Baywood logo stitched onto the cuff. If you’re still not sure what to buy, you can buy gift cards at the shop as well as online at their website (baywoodgreens.com.) For more information, call the Baywood Pro Shop at 302-947-9800.

The Rookery’s pro shops at both North and South courses are selling golf shirts at 25 percent off for one shirt, with 40 percent off for purchases of two or more. Golf shoes are discounted 25 percent, and selected shirts are also on sale for as low as $29.99. Golf bags are now 25 percent off, with some as low as $99. Select outerwear is also available at a 25 percent discount, and any hats in the hat bin are on sale at two for $25.

Gift certificates are also available at both locations, as well as the Rookery’s website (rookerygolf.com), along with the opportunity to buy a single or a block of lessons from each of the Rookery’s golf pros. Rookery North is at 6152 S. Rehoboth Blvd., Milford (302-422-7010), and Rookery South is at 27052 Broadkill Road, Milton (302-684-3000).

Plantation Lakes is the newest public golf course in the Cape Region, at 20301 Charlotte Blvd., Millsboro (302-733-8072), and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (PlantationLakesClub.com). Head golf pro Steve Farrell says they have several items at 30 to 50 percent off, and are also running a winter special for playing the course at $35 for 18 holes. Gift certificates are also available.

Don’t forget the other public golf courses in the Cape Region, all of which would welcome Christmas-related opportunities to serve you.

Stenger’s Shamrock Par 3 Golf on Saw Mill Road is a pleasant par-3 layout just west of Milton at 22222 Saw Mill Road. For more information, phone 302-684-1808 or go to ShamrockPar3Golf.com.

Marsh Island Golf Club at 21383 Camp Arrowhead Road is popular with Cape Region locals who enjoy the challenging short layout. It can be reached at 302-945-4653.

Midway Par 3 remains in operation as a longtime Cape Region favorite outside Lewes, just off Route 1 at 34578 Pinnacle Road (302-645-7955; midwaypar3golf.com).

The newest addition to the Cape Region golf scene is the simulator at 365 Golf at 37165 Rehoboth Ave. (365golfde.com; 302-727-0789). Owner Ben Bateman says they’re doing well with selling gift cards, and they have just started selling interval memberships in three-, six- and 12-month allotments.

For Cape Region golfers who tell you they already have everything they need or want, you might consider a donation in their names to the First Tee of Delaware. Thousands of young people have been served statewide by the program, which emphasizes character building, life skills and the healthy habits golf can impart.

At the organization’s website, thefirstteedelaware.org, you can make your contribution toward the official wish list, such as training materials, a bag and shirt for one child ($75).

For more information, call The First Tee at 302-384-8759.
