Among the many special activities offered at The Lodge at Historic Lewes is the twice-weekly art class.
Now in its third year, the class taught by Kim Hanna, a professional painter and graphic designer, meets every Tuesday and Friday. Lodge residents Frank Ancona, Linda Murchison, Nancy Reeves, Christena Umsted, Dallee Hipps, Anne Trifiro, Sue Pastroff and an occasional brave new soul arrive at each session with enthusiasm and a boundless willingness to learn. Most have had little or no prior art experience, but they are ready to try something new. The group has evolved into a close-knit community of friends who share stories, laughter and life experiences.
Over time, their confidence and skills have grown. Many began painting on their own, purchasing materials and exploring fresh ideas. With some encouragement from Hanna and Brett Gershman, the Lodge activities director, their artwork is now proudly framed and displayed in a new exhibit gracing the facility’s dining room walls.
“The class has helped the resident artists to tap into a creative reservoir within that was always there,” said Hanna. “All that was needed was some encouragement and commitment, and the result is now a wonderful exhibit.”
Activities like creating art offer wide-ranging benefits that enhance cognitive, emotional and physical well-being, and contribute to a more fulfilling and engaging life. This class is a testament to the power of artistic pursuit and lifelong learning.
