Lois W. Shelley, devoted church member

October 9, 2025

Lois W. Shelley, 82, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2025. She was born March 30, 1943, in Wilmington, daughter of the late Delbert John and Kathryn May Kesselring Wilson.

Lois spent her formative years by the tranquil waters of Dewey Beach, where her father's boatyard served as the backdrop for countless childhood adventures. It was there that she developed her entrepreneurial spirit, rowing her boat out to catch crabs and fish, which she would sell with great pride on the pier. This early connection to nature stayed with Lois throughout her life, as evidenced by her love of watching wildlife from her home in the Glade and her remarkable skills as a gardener.

Her passion for beauty and design led Lois to a fulfilling career as an interior decorator in Virginia and Delaware, which included her last position with the former Webster Furniture store. Her creative touch and keen eye for detail were appreciated by all who had the pleasure of experiencing her work.

Lois's faith was a cornerstone of her existence. As a devoted member of Epworth United Methodist Church, she found great comfort in her Christian beliefs. Her spirit was nurtured by the community and the melodies of the choir, where her beloved husband, Samuel Arthur "Art" Shelley, who predeceased her in 2008, once lifted his voice in praise.

Her home was a hub of hospitality, where Lois's gift for entertaining shone brightly. She was known for hosting themed parties and luncheons that drew friends and family together in celebration and fellowship. Her straightforward nature often came through in her candid phrase, "It doesn't suit," a testament to her honest and direct approach to life.

Lois is survived by her cousin, Rebecca Collison; Barbara Brittingham, a devoted friend and helper since first grade; and Jessica Gibbs, a loving caregiver for Lois in her final years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Epworth United Methodist Church, 19285 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth Beach, where the viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be private at Epworth Methodist Cemetery, Rehoboth Beach.
