Lots of action at Shamrock Shuffle Half-Marathon
Eleven teams took part in the relay portion of the Shamrock Shuffle Half-Marathon March 15 in Cape Henlopen State Park, with the lead runner completing 6 miles and the anchor runner completing 7.11 miles. All team runners received custom key chains at the finish.
Team BXLN – Zell Flamer and Kywine Vann of Dover – won the male relay division in a combined time of 2:18:00.7.
The female team division went to a pair of Cape runners, Logan Crotty and Natalie Schneider of Lewes, in a time of 1:41:13.7, while teammates Maile Godwin of Lewes and Bridgett Cole of Milton, calling themselves Lucky Charms, finished second in 1:44:33.1. The Charleston Chiks – Karin and Kylie Crookes of Mount Pleasant, S.C. – finished third in 1:49:07.5. Fourth place went to the Dynamic Duo – Jackie Quigley of Georgetown and Debbie Isser of Milton – in a time of 1:57:47.1. Wrapping up the fifth-place award were the Sourdough Queens – Angela Swarm and Sheila Young of Rehoboth – in a time of 2:15:23.8.
In the coed team division, it was the Ace of Pace team with the fastest time of the day, as Robert and Jamie Hicks of Milford logged a time of 1:38:15.5. Getting Old with Stephen Spence and Heather Alleman of Lewes were timed in 1:51:49.7 for second place.
Local Seashore Striders runner Martin Rodriguez, 44, won the half-marathon individual title in 1:25:54.8, while Elizabeth Hauger, 38, of New Jersey won the female title in 1:28:56.0. The male masters title went to Paul Montini, 58, in 1:34:39.0, while Lisa Sherman, 52, won the female masters division in 1:49:18.2.
Bennett Brumbley of Laurel, coming off a successful high school wrestling season, ran the half with a friend after three days of light training. He won his 19U age group in 1:34:54.1. Blake Stillman of Georgetown finished second with an identical time. Tim Young of Rehoboth Beach finished third in the 60-69 group in 1:49:29.2, while Adam Lawler of Lewes won the age group in 1:44:14.5. Paul Timmons of Rehoboth won the 50-59 age group in 1:36:24.5, while Jamie Hall of Lewes finished second in the 40-49 age group in 2:14:26.0 and Andrew Hocker of Milton was third in 2:56:33.7. Beau Croll of Lewes ran 1:45:06.8 to win the 30-39 group, while Ben Scheib of Lewes was second in 2:13:30.5. Huxley Conner was second in the 20-29 group in 1:57:00.6.
In the 5K event, Tim Pagano, 40, of Lewes won the male title in 17:28.7, while Hadley Rhue of Rehoboth Beach won the female title in 21:27.5. Stephen Crowell of Fairfax Station, Va., won the male masters race in 20:08.0, while Teri Welsh of Milton won the female masters competition in 24:23.8.
Finish chute - Ryan Moody of Milton and Sussex Academy ran 4:18.88 to finish 89th in the mile championship at the New Balance Nationals in Boston. Jordan Welsh of Delaware Elite and Sussex Tech finished fifth in the long jump with a leap of 23-feet-50-inches and 18th in the triple jump in 46-10. Dylan Harp of Milton finished 60th in 4:51.94 in the freshman mile. University of South Carolina men won the NCAA national mile relay championship in 3:02. My son, an assistant coach for the Gamecocks, tells me they averaged 45.5 per man over 400 meters. Nationals for Division I was held in Arkansas. Two weekends off for the Seashore Striders before we head to Bethany for the annual Bunny Palooza 5K and 1-Mile Walk Saturday, April 4.
