Madeline Showell Handy, H&H Poultry retiree

Madeline Showell Handy was born Oct. 22, 1932, in Bishopville, Md. to the late Harry and Mary Laws Showell. She departed this life Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md., surrounded by her loving family.

She attended schools in Sussex County and Worcester County, Md. On Feb. 19, 1950, Madeline was united in holy matrimony to Edward P. Handy. She worked at H&H Poultry in Selbyville, and Get Smart Inc. in Ocean City, Md. You could always find her sitting at the kitchen table doing her “Penny Press” word search puzzles or standing at the door watching her great-grands ride their scooters.

Madeline leaves to mourn her husband of 62 years, Edward P. Handy of Selbyville; three daughters, Gloria (Paul) Pugh of Westover, Md., Mary Ellen Handy of Bishopville and Annette Handy of Selbyville; a stepson Bill (Terry) Smith and a stepdaughter Diane Purnell, both of Berlin, Md.; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a special nephew Clifton Showell Jr. of Felton; a special cousin Gordon (Mamie) Purnell of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her daughter Peggy Showell; grandson Calvin Handy; and her brothers Wallace Showell and Clifton Showell Sr.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 1, at Zoar United Methodist Church in Selbyville, where family and friends may call two hours prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Zoar Golden Acres Cemetery in Bishopville.
