Man rescued from deep trench near Lewes
A 75-year-old inspector was trapped in a trench on Savannah Road outside Lewes about noon, March 23.
The Lewes Fire Department was dispatched for a motor vehicle accident at Savannah Road and Bayview Medical Drive. Then, just after dispatch, the incident was changed to a confined-space rescue, adding the Sussex County Technical Rescue Team and Sussex County Department of Public Safety paramedics to the response.
Units arrived to find an injured worker in an excavation trench about 15 feet deep. Crews worked to ensure the area was stable and safe for personnel to operate. Crews then made access to the patient to assess injuries and prepare the individual for safe removal. The patient was successfully removed and transported to a local hospital.
