Mariner Middle AVID students plan for college

January 2, 2022

Mariner Middle School seventh- and eighth-graders in the Advancement Via Individual Determination program are planning ahead.

Students in Heather Kindl’s AVID elective classes recently completed their college research unit. Students spent time online exploring different colleges, and then created a presentation for their classmates of what a future at their selected college or university might look like.

“The students first did a quick-glance research of four colleges they were interested in applying to that have their majors,” said Kindl. “We discussed application fees, distance and sizes of campuses, and then the kids needed to select one of the four to do more extensive research.”

In addition to the basic information and history about the school, students also identified courses they would need to take within their selected major, noted extracurricular activities like clubs and sports, history about the school, and even shared famous graduates.

“This was a great overall opportunity for our students to explore college as an option,” said Kindl. “Whether they end up attending the school they presented about or end up on a different path, I’m proud of the work they have put into learning more about their post-high school options.”

AVID is a program with a mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in the global society. It’s offered as an option to students in sixth to 12th grades at Beacon Middle School, Mariner Middle School and Cape Henlopen High School.

The program helps prepare students for four-year college eligibility and has a proven track record of bringing out the best in students by helping them to realize their goals. AVID students will often be the first in their families to attend college.
