The Cape track girls defeated Milford 92-54 and Sussex Tech 98-58 May 1 on Milford's home track, sounding the alarm statewide "May Day! May Day!" that the defending Division I state champions are not back – they never left.
The Vikings started the scoring by winning the 4 by 800 relay over Sussex Tech, but placing second to Milford with Ali Coning, Madison MacElrevey, Keren Rams and Shanel Dickens in 10:48.
Shanel Dickens would come back and win the 1,600 meters in 5:37 and the 800 in 2:26 by employing the 300-meters-from-home burn to the finish line.
Cape, better known as "Jump Street” in the track world, saw Donna Davis win the long jump in 16 feet 2 inches, Akeesha Duffy the triple in 34 feet 7 inches, Juli Kyritas the high jump in 4 feet 8 inches and Kayla Albertella the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet.
Kadija Doughty won the shot put with a 38-foot-4-inch throw and discus with 103-foot-7-inch toss.
Freshman Anshe Boyer stepped up to the 400 and ran 64.1 seconds to go along with her 25.8 in the 200 and 12.5 in the 100.
Cape swept the 300 hurdles, with Tyra Weatherly in 48.7 seconds, Amanda Hurst in 51.2 and Donna Davis in 53.0.
The Vikings ran a sizzling time of 49.1 seconds to win the 4 by 100 relay with a team of Boyer, Doughty, Weatherly and Duffy.
The 4 by 400 team of Weatherly, Liz Sparks, Coning and Dickens ran 4:25.
The quality and depth in each event make Cape a tough out in any size track meet.
