Meyer signs Literacy Month proclamation

AI to soon be available as classroom resource
October 2, 2025

Gov. Matt Meyer rolled up to North Georgetown Elementary School Sept. 22 just like he did during his teaching years, but this time with a laser focus on literacy.

“So much of learning starts with the bedrock of literacy,” he said before signing a Literacy Month proclamation.

Standing in the school’s library surrounded by books, Meyer spoke of the importance of learning to enjoy reading. Today, he said, there are more distractions than ever, but he’s committed to improving the literacy rate among Delaware schoolchildren, recently declaring a literacy emergency in the state.

Joining Meyer was Department of Education Secretary Cynthia Marten who said she looks forward to visiting schools and hearing from teachers on what they need to succeed.

“Teachers know their students best,” she said.

Marten said she looks forward to incorporating artificial intelligence tools in the classroom for an added resource.
