Mike Wardian, now 50, is the reigning American king of long attention spans in endurance races. On Memorial Day, Wardian jumped into the Highway One 5K just to test his speed and won the race with a 16:50 clocking just ahead of Noah Seto, 23, of Wilton, Calif., who ran 16:53.

Kyle Brightbill, 49, won the male masters title in 18:19. The female open title went to Brooke Golba, 15, of Salisbury, Md., in 21:47. Ella Pietrosanti, 12, of Elmsford, N.Y., was second female in 22:32; followed by Hannah Craig, 11, in 23:01; Ruby Leps, 9, in 23:09; and Kari Seto, 19, in 23:24. Traci Seto, 55, won the female masters title in 23:24.

Wardian’s next ultra race will be running the 2,100-plus miles of the Appalachian Trail starting in Maine in August and ending in Georgia.

“My goal is to complete the journey in 50 days in my 50th year,” Wardian said. “That’s over 40 miles a day.”

A total of 154 runners completed the Highway One 5K.

The next Races2Run race at the beach is the University of Delaware Chicken Chase Saturday, June 8, starting in Dewey Beach.
