Milford Housing Development Corp. to break ground on 100th home Aug. 25
Milford Housing Development Corp., a nonprofit affordable housing developer, will start construction on its 100th Self-Help home at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, with a ground-breaking ceremony at the Crescent Shores subdivision in Lincoln.
Milford Housing Development Corp.’s (MHDC’s) Self-Help Housing Program helps working families of modest means purchase homes. The MHDC Self-Help Program has constructed 100 homes since 1998, using a sweat-equity program. On average, the program has generated thousands of dollars for each homeowner, with the MHDC program averaging $30,000 of sweat equity per family.
This sweat equity is utilized in lieu of a downpayment and with interest rates as low as 1 percent. This makes homeownership attainable for many who may believe it is not possible.
“Not only is this our 100th Self-Help home, we are already processing our 115th,” said David Moore, MHDC president and CEO.
The MHDC program provides credit and homeownership counseling to help families become mortgage able. MHDC then provides on-site construction supervision to the group of families who build together, so even someone with minimal skills can build a home. After that, MHDC continues to partner with the families by providing one year of post-occupancy counseling.
