Milton 8-10 all-stars dominating baseball bracket
Defense might win championships, but offense does a whole lot to keep a team in the conversation.
It’s safe to say the Milton 8-10 baseball all-stars came out swinging to start the District 3 tournament, outscoring their first two opponents 23-1 and getting deep into the double-elimination bracket without a single loss.
Up first July 2 was Georgetown. Henry Hill’s eye and savvy base running put the visitors on top 1-0. While the game was played in Milton, Georgetown was the home team. Garrett Mears knotted the contest 1-1, but it would be the only run Milton would concede.
Wyatt Dean opened the second with a single. He came around to score when Ronan Schlezes picked up an infield single with the bases loaded. Jacob Reynolds increased Milton’s lead to 3-1 when he crossed on a dribbler off the bat of Michael Sockriter.
Dean doubled to open up the fourth inning. He scored on Hudson Libby’s double to left. Schlezes’ at-bat was once again fruitful, as Reynolds swiped home on a ball and Libby came around to score on Schlezes’ single. Schlezes made his way around the bases on Sockriter’s turn at the plate to give Milton a 7-1 lead into the fourth inning.
A scoreless fifth was followed by a one-run sixth, scored by Dean and generated off the bat of Libby, that gave Milton the 8-1 win to move to a second-round game against Woodbridge July 3.
Dean led the team in the win with three runs, and tied Libby and Schlezes with two hits. Libby and Schlezes also drove in the most runs, each with two. Hill technically did not record an at-bat, walking all three times.
The lads stayed as hot as the weather when they traveled to Nanticoke to take on Woodbridge, ending things abruptly after scoring 15 runs in the first three innings without conceding any. Three runs in the second inning were sandwiched between six in the first and seven in the third, leading to the 15-0 victory.
Krew Johnson was on the bump, striking out eight over three innings and helping his own cause by leading the team with three runs, three RBIs and two hits. Johnson was tied with Hill and Jase DeLacy in the runs category, and Bryce DeLacy, Jase DeLacy, Dean, Brock Davis and Sockriter in the hits column.
At 2-0, Milton is set to square up against 2-0 Millsboro at Nanticoke Little League Tuesday, July 8, for a spot in the title game.
Editor’s note: Inclement weather pushed the tournament back one day. The story has been updated to reflect the date of Milton’s next game.
