Milton-area students were recognized for their award-winning posters and essays in the Milton Fire Department’s fire prevention contest award ceremony Feb. 23.

Fire Chief Johnny Hopkins said part of his duty is helping to educate youth about fire prevention.

“It’s been a blessing for me to serve this department and this community the past 30 years,” Hopkins said.

The contest was open to schools in the Milton fire district, Hopkins said. Contest categories included identifying home fire hazards, fire safety in the kitchen and what students should do if their clothing catches fire.

Participating students received a $5 gift card and medal for placing. In addition to their school awards, several students received county honors, Milton Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary President Mary Ann Warrington said.

H.O. Brittingham fifth-grader Marisa Golan placed first at the county level and has moved on to state competition, Warrington said; state winners will be announced Sunday, April 3. Marissa received $100 for placing first in the county.

Delmarva Christian kindergartener Julia Rieske and Mariner Middle seventh-grader Aidan Wyatt also won second place at the county level, Warrington said. Each student received $75 for placing at the county level.
