Milton Elementary first-graders utilize outdoor classroom

December 6, 2021

The newly renovated Milton Elementary School opened its doors to students and staff at the start of this school year.

One of the new school’s many unique features is located outside the building. A brand-new outdoor classroom space is near the new playground, along the tree line at Wagamons Pond. The screened-in outdoor classroom offers space for students and staff to learn outside, and provided the first-grade team a space to host its Thanksgiving fall festival Nov. 18. Students gathered to enjoy each other’s company and participate in two art activities.

“Our first-graders had the chance to paint apples to make apple prints, as well as create pine cone turkeys,” said Jorge Moreno Jaen, first-grade Spanish immersion teacher. “We are also very grateful for retired Cape teacher, Mr. George Pepper and his wife, who shared their family’s apple cider press with our students.”

During the festival, each student had the opportunity to participate in making homemade apple cider by placing two apples into the press. Together, they made almost six gallons of cider.

“It was a beautiful, warm day,” said Tracey Keller, first-grade English language arts teacher in the Spanish immersion program. “Our students and teachers enjoyed the activities and spending time in the new outdoor classroom space!”
