Milton firefighters respond to hay baler fire

June 27, 2022

Milton Fire Department spent two-and-a-half hours June 25, fighting a fire involving farm equipment on Cave Neck Road. The fire burned 50 acres of field.

About 1:15 p.m., firefighters were alerted to a hay baler that caught on fire. Due to heavy winds, the fire spread rapidly over a 100-by-100-square-foot area of field. Assistance was called from departments in Lewes, Ellendale and Georgetown.

On its Facebook page, Milton Fire Department advised citizens that there may be smoke and fire visible over the next couple days as hay bales are still smoldering. However, the department said the situation is not a threat to public safety and will be monitored by the farmer and the department.
