The Milton Garden Club recently presented nine recipients with rose bud vases as part of the May Basket award program. Traditionally, in the 19th and early 20th centuries small baskets of flowers were delivered to friends and neighbors who needed a lift to their spirits. The baskets were usually made and delivered by children.
This year the garden club selected six honorees because they or a family member were ill or they needed to know someone was thinking of them. One recipient is always from the field of education, and this year's winner in this category was HOB Secretary Katina Bell. The winner of the business/organization service to the community award was John Potocki of Salon Milton. Special recognition was given to Esthelda Parker-Selby as a thank you for her years of service on the Cape Henlopen school board and the Milton Town Council.
"People recognize us for the flowers we plant and all our efforts to beautify Milton, but I believe our May Basket program is one of the best things we do," said club member Kathryn Greig. "It was so heartwarming to see the smiles and the tears when we delivered the flowers."
