Milton historic commission grants addition request

November 21, 2019

Milton Historic Preservation Commission unanimously granted a request from a Federal Street homeowner to build an addition to her home.

The commission allowed Jolynn Esham, 207 Federal St., to build what will become an extra bedroom with a porch. Esham told the commission Nov. 12 the addition was in order to allow her to move downstairs.

Esham said she is planning to tear down a smaller bedroom in the back of the house and build a larger bedroom that will encroach into the side-yard setbacks by 8 feet on the north side of the property and 3 feet on the south side.

She said the bedroom will also include a bathroom and walk-in closet. Esham said she would use the same roof material and vinyl siding color to match the rest of the house. Esham was granted a variance to encroach into the side-yard setback by the board of adjustment Oct. 29.

The commission reviews any construction, alteration or demolition of structures within the town’s historic district, which is nationally recognized in the National Register of Historic Places. The district generally runs between Broad Street and Chestnut Street, encompassing the downtown area.
