Milton Lions Club holds Veterans Day ceremony

November 14, 2023

Milton Lions Club held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m., Nov. 11 at Milton Cemetery on Union Street.

The time is in keeping with how Veterans Day came to be, as a celebration of the armistice to end World War I, which was signed at 11 a.m., Nov. 11, 1918. The holiday morphed from a celebration of the armistice to a celebration of military veterans, officially becoming a federal holiday in 1954.

The ceremony was emceed by Milton Lions Club President Jim Coverdale and featured remarks by Mayor John Collier. Names of Milton-area veterans were read out in the presence of rows of American flags, with music provided by the Delaware State Police Pipe and Drums band.
