Milton majors outlast Lewes 1-0 in baseball action
The tenacious Milton major all-stars outlasted a scrappy Lewes squad 1-0 on a walk-off single in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie July 17 in Milton.
It was a pitchers’ duel for the first five innings, as Lewes could only garner three hits from Ben Tollett, Christian Cabello and Jameson Pease. Milton got hits from Jordan Williams, Trizton Willey and Trey Dickinson, but the biggest hit of the game was from Nate Kristunas.
With two outs in the bottom of the scoreless sixth inning, Ike Beam walked, stole second and moved to third on an error. That set up a Disney movie scene when Kristunas came to bat. There were two outs and the count was 2-2 when the No. 9 hitter, 4-foot-7-inch and 72 pounds Kristunas, took a fastball and drove it to the opposite field to score Beam and win the game.
“It was a 2-2 fastball,” said Kristunas. “That was very stressful. Oh my goodness. I knew he wasn’t going to throw a curveball because it was too big a risk in that situation. I was sitting on a fastball and got the pitch to hit. I was praying in the box. I was praying.”
Lewes pitchers Tollett and Cabello teamed for 10 strikeouts, while Milton’s Joe Ruark had six strikeouts and Willey garnered one. Willey picked up the W.
Milton will face Laurel Tuesday, July 19, in Milton, while Lewes plays Woodbridge Monday, July 18, in Laurel.
