Milton public art display celebrates Broadkill River

October 30, 2025

With support from the Delaware Division of the Arts, Milton Main Street recently unveiled a downtown art installation celebrating the Broadkill River.

Repurposed oars and paddles were painted by students and art teachers at Mariner Middle School, and Milton and H.O. Brittingham elementary schools. The images on the oars include fish, birds and flowers. One oar includes buttons, in reference to the many home-based industries that produced buttons from oyster shells in the early to mid-20th century in Milton.

Two sails created by local adult artists greet visitors at the exhibition’s two entrances along the Governors’ Walk section next to the public library.

Milton Town Council member and artist Randi Meredith’s “Forest Floor – Day and Night” shows a mix of ferns and other leaves, with one side of the sail showing day and the other side showing night.

The sail titled “Hope Flows Through Milton,” by Lynda Rae Gannon, Liz Miceli and Joyce Radnor, celebrates the Broadkill River and the familiar “Hope” signs that sprang up across the community during the pandemic and have become a beloved local feature.
